Stop Running on Autopilot: Mindfulness for Normal People

What mindful decision will you make today to improve your health?

We’ve all been there.

Wake up. Have coffee. Maybe squeeze in some exercise (or maybe not). Work. Dinner. Netflix. Bed. Repeat.

Sound familiar?

As a high-achieving woman, you're incredible at getting things done. But how often are you really choosing what you do, rather than floating through life on autopilot?

How often do you prioritize your mental and physical health over convenience and ease?

On Episode 128 of More Than Anxiety, I sat down with Christine Ross, a health and wellness coach, to talk about the difference between mindful living and just existing. That conversation made me reflect on the daily choices we all make that determine our health, happiness, and energy.

And here’s the thing: even the smallest choices add up to create positive changes or regret.

The Power of the Pause

Consider this.

You had a busy day at work and it's still going 100 mph when you get home.

Feeling overwhelmed and tired and looking for something... anything to help you feel better.

Do you reach for the wine? Your hidden stash of Oreos

Do you snap at your partner or kids over something trivial?

No judgment from me.

We’ve all done it. It’s automatic.

But what if you paused and asked yourself, "What do I really need right now?"

Could you answer that question?

Focusing on what works for you, knowing yourself well enough to know what you really feel and need, and giving up on perfection opens the door to slow, sustainable, intentional progress.

One small decision at a time, and that pause is where the magic happens.

It’s where you shift from reacting to choosing.

Instead of grabbing junk food, you pause, breathe, and check in instead of checking out.

Instead of zoning out with Netflix, you text a friend for a walk.

These tiny, mindful decisions rewire your brain. They break old patterns and create a healthier, more balanced, and present way of living.

Being in the Moment to Move Beyond the Moment

Every small choice you make builds the foundation for better physical and mental health.

When you consistently nourish your body, move, and prioritize real connections, your life starts to change. You have:

More Energy – Imagine waking up rested and ready for the day instead of dragging yourself through it.

Better Relationships – When you’re less stressed and more present, your connections grow. You have the energy be present and engaged with the people you love.

Increased Productivity – Self-care is not a luxury; it’s a strategy you implement every day. When you take care of yourself, you’re more confident, more creative, calmer, and more effective at work and at home.

A Deeper Connection to Yourself – Mindful living helps you tune into your needs. You start making choices that actually align with your values and goals.

Mindful Living is a Journey, Not a Destination (So cliché, right?)

This isn’t about becoming a perfectly zen, fit, mindful person overnight.

It’s about progress. It's one step, one thought, and one habit at a time.

It’s about self-compassion, acknowledging when you slip into old patterns, and gently guiding yourself back on track.

So take a moment right now.

Pause.

Breathe.

And ask yourself: What do I choose today?
